A garlic-scented, open pollinated perennial herb that overwinters in much of Alaska. It is grown for its flattened leaves, which are chopped up and used as a seasoning, adding zest to many dishes. The plant is also very attractive in the garden because it produces showy flowers. Chives may be started indoors, then planted in the garden. The culture is the same as for onions. The plants are hardy and require no special attention. Chives can also be grown midwinter in a sunny window.
