A plant that is grown for its hollow, cylindrical. onion flavored leaves that are chopped up and used as a seasoning, adding zest to many dishes, soups, salads, cottage cheese and stews. A plant that is also very attractive in the garden because it produces showy rose-purple flowers. Chives may be started indoors and then planted in the garden but also grows well as a potted plant.
